His work examines the visual culture of the contemporary city, with particular attention to artificial illumination, commercial imagery, architecture, fashion, labour and the systems through which everyday environments acquire meaning.

His practice frequently moves between documentary observation and fiction. Photographs become archival objects; familiar commodities are detached from their conventional hierarchies; real buildings and businesses are reconstructed inside simulated cities; essays, films and games share characters, locations and visual motifs. Through these processes, the city becomes both subject and method: a field of signs, objects, images and minor mythologies that can be collected, classified and rearranged.

Recent work includes The Spectres Are All Around Us, an expanding body of photography, film, writing, objects and interactive work, and Zealot of Harpurhey, a playable representation of Manchester exploring urban representation, commercial semiotics, gig labour, archives and simulation. This work treats the archive, the website and the video game as artistic forms in themselves.
